About this episode
Modern philosophy has largely abandoned earlier metaphysical pursuits due to debates on universals and the separation of philosophy from theology. The focus has shifted to empirical sciences, disregarding the project of integrating faith and reason. The term "metaphysics" is contested, and religious and physical sciences are disconnected. This leads to a crisis where reason is divorced from revelation in the West and revelation divorced from reason in the Muslim world. Muslims have adopted Western science without considering its metaphysical assumptions, causing societal upheaval. Ethical concerns suffer as metaphysics is ignored, and current ethics lack a rational basis. The Catholic Church maintains ethical principles rooted in metaphysics, but its influence has waned. In the Muslim world, ethical concerns lack a systematic approach, and theological education lacks depth. The embrace of Western science has had negative consequences for Muslim societies and the planet.
