This lecture follows Carlyle’s narration of the world into which Muhammad (saw) was born: Mecca as the bustling fair of Arabia, a commercial and religious hub governed by the Quraish. From this background emerges the orphan boy of the Hashemite clan, raised under the care of his grandfather and uncle, and marked early as thoughtful and trustworthy - Al-Amin, “the truthful.” With no formal learning, his education came from the desert, trading journeys, and glimpses of the wider world, including Syria and its Christianity. Carlyle presents him as a sincere, taciturn, yet warm and honest soul, already a man set apart, preparing for the task ahead.
