This lecture explores Carlyle’s account of the Arabs’ deep religiosity before Islam, an instinct to see divine meaning in stars, stones, and nature itself. Though often misdirected, it revealed a genuine poetic vision of the universe as God’s sign. From this spiritual soil arose traditions of prophets and the timeless Book of Job, which Carlyle praises as “all men’s Book.” The focus then turns to the Kaabah and the Black Stone, sacred for centuries before Muhammad (saw), and how the pilgrimages surrounding it gave rise to Mecca as both a spiritual and commercial centre of Arabia.
