You might wonder why you need to learn how to read a book. After all, you have been reading since you were a child. You know how to read words, sentences, and paragraphs. You know how to follow a story or an argument. But do you really know how to read a book?
Do you know reading including a thorough analysis and evaluation to understand main arguments and ideas of a book? Do you know how to criticize and question books to challenge their assumptions and perspectives? Do you know how to synthesize and apply books to integrate their knowledge and wisdom into your life?
If you are not sure about any of these questions, then you need to learn how to read a book. Reading is not just a skill. It’s an art. And like any art, it requires practice, discipline, and guidance. It also requires different levels of understanding and engagement depending on the type and purpose of the book.
Most people read books at the lowest level of understanding: elementary reading. They read for information, entertainment, or escape. They read passively, superficially, and uncritically. They read without much effort or attention.
But there are higher levels of reading that can transform your reading experience: inspectional reading, analytical reading, and syntopical reading. These are the levels of reading that will help you become an active, critical, and creative reader. These are the levels of reading that will help you master the art of reading.
In this series, we will learn, God willingly, how to read at these higher levels of reading. This series is based on the book How to Read a Book by Mortimer J. Adler and Charles Van Doren, which is considered one of the best guides on reading ever written. I will also draw from my own experience and research on reading, as well as from other sources.
